If you have an occasion which requires decorative floral pieces in Sydney you might be tossing up between buying real or synthetic flowers. While synthetic flowers might look authentic, there is nothing quite like the fragrance and aura of real flowers.
Faux flowers
There is no doubt that synthetic flowers have become trendy in the last couple of years due to their extremely real appearance and availability. However, paying for artificial flowers does not come as cheaply as some would imagine. Top of the range synthetic flowers can cost a small handful to order, and is not necessarily a cheaper route to buying real flowers.
Real flowers
Unlike synthetic flowers real flowers are hand-picked from nature, and bring a level of beauty and authenticity to an occasion that just cannot compare to fake flowers.
While some may argue that synthetic flowers can be kept for life, real flowers can also be dried and pressed to hold onto as a keepsake to remember a special occasion.
Using real flowers allows you to take advantage of in season, local delights. Speak to your florist in the North shore to find out if there are wildflowers or local varieties suited to Dee Why or St Ives that you can include in the flower arrangements. Real flowers don’t have to be expensive and using local varieties can often help to reduce costs.

Cymbidium Orchids are known to be one of the most beautiful, and easy to maintain potted plants. In order to make sure that your plants flower beautifully take not of these orchid growing tips. As a specialist Florist in the North Shore at Hills The Flower Market we know that you first need to check to see if your orchid needs re-potting.
This won’t need to be done every year, but only once the pot becomes over-crowded.
Sharp Knife
Get a sharp knife to help you separate the plant and discard any rotten patches or old bulbs with no leaves. You can break the orchid into multiple sections but remember that the smaller the section, the longer you will wait for new flowers.
When re-potting, use an orchid specific potting mix. Cymbidium orchids need effective drainage so avoid overwatering and use suitable containers. Most florist would recommend terracotta pots they are ideal as they offer good drainage. There are plenty of places locally in North Shore areas like Dee why, Belrose and St Ives where you can find suitable pots, we also have a range in our Terrey Hills market.
Encourage Plant Growth
Once the orchid has been re-potted, water well with seaweed tonic to encourage plant growth, and then place the plant somewhere shady until late summer when plant starts the flowering process all over again.
Between February and March move your orchid into a sunnier spot to encourage flowering in the next winter. Feed orchid plants every so often, using orchid food and remembering to water both leaves and soil.
Snails are rather fond of orchids so use pellets or natural methods to repel the slimy pests. Periodically check leaves for any signs of insects.
